Abstract

Helical screw piles have been used in Brazil as foundations for transmission towers and as pipeline anchorage. In recent years, helical foundations have become more widely used in our country despite being used for over 60 years in other lands. There are few studies about helical piles developed in Brazil. Also, the international geotechnical literature presents a small number of contributions to the calculation of the uplift capacity of this type of foundation. For this reason, coupled with the fact that the utilization of this type of pile are increasing constantly, the aim of the present project is to improve the prevision of the uplift capacity of helical piles. The pullout resistance of helical anchors is strongly affected by the number and composition of helical plates welded to the pile steel shaft. Consequently, this project proposes an experimental investigation in conjunction with numerical modeling to study the effect of helical plates on the uplift capacity of helical piles. Through these results, it is expected to identify the increasing of the amount of capacity gain with the increasing of the number of helices, and the composition of helical plates diameters. In addition, by using these data, the usual calculation methods found in the literature will be adjusted, allowing a better estimation of the helical pile behaviour. (AU)
