Chitosan films loaded with phytotherapic for wound dressing

Abstract

Polymeric films are used as wound dressing for burns and wound healing. Healing, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties can be induced and/or potentiated with the incorporation of bioactive like phytotherapics. This work will produce chitosan films incorporating aloe vera extract and/or Copaiba oil having the mentioned properties. The films will be prepared by dispersion of the suspension of the bioactive and chitosan on a surface and slow drying. The variables studied in the preparation of the films will be: concentration of chitosan and concentration of bioactive. The films will be evaluated according to the thickness, water permeability, water vapor permeability, microorganism permeability, differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and biological assays (inhibition to bacterial growth, in vitro cytotoxicity and adhesion). The performance of the films containing the phytotherapics will be compared with a commercial dressing (Veloderm) as well as chitosan films containing silver sulfadiazine, an important drug used in burns treatment. The results will serve as a criterion for choosing the films that will be tested in an in vivo study with rats. (AU)
