Abstract

Cancer is one of the most important causes of mortality for humans and animals. In dogs, it is estimated that 1 in every 3-4 animals will develop some type of cancer, two times more than humans. Flavonoids, substances present in several plant species, are considered promising substances for development of drugs to be used in prevention and combat of the disease. However, studies on their mechanisms of action and the relevance of the different effects on the cellular genetic material are still required. Therefore, the overall objective of this project is to analyze the effects of flavonoids in the canine macrophage cell line DH82, originated from a histiocytoma, with special focus on global DNA methylation, induction of lesions in the DNA, expression of genes related to DNA repair, tumor suppressors and genes coding DNA metiltransferases and topoisomerases.
