Seroepidemiological and molecular characterization of malarial infection in neotropical primates in the state of Maranhão

Abstract

This study aims to characterize the etiology, epidemiology and molecular simian malaria in the state of Maranhao through blood samples of primates in captivity and free living. Thus, the morphological observation of the parasite will be done by using traditional techniques recommended by the Health Ministry for diagnosis of human malaria in thick blood smears, which allows the specific differentiation of parasites and their stages of development in the peripheral blood, due high concentration parasitised erythrocytes in blood film, which allows better visualization of the structures of the parasite and the characteristic changes in the parasitized erythrocyte. For species-specific identification and quantification will be held, respectively, molecular techniques of PCR and qPCR. And we will evaluate the existence and frequency of antibodies anti-Plasmodium in free life and captive primates by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). The project is licensed by IBAMA no. 23078-1 and it was approved by the Ethics Committee on Animal Use (CEUA) from Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho, Jaboticabal, Protocol No. 020091/09. This project to intend to study the possible transmission of primate malaria to human and vice versa, and to diagnose the species of Plasmodium in primates as reservoirs in the state of Maranhão - Brazil.
