Abstract

Pork is the main source of animal protein worldwide, representing about 40% of all meat consumption. For pork production process, weight gain of pigs is influenced by variation of growth rate during the first weeks after weaning. In this stage, the immaturity of digestive system and the drastic changes in intestinal physiology of pigs affect the processes of nutrient digestion and absorption, reduce feed intake, decrease performance and predispose animals to diseases. Thus, the use of products that benefit the digestive process is very important in swine production. Studies have shown that sorbitol may act as important pro-nutrient in pig diet by stimulating bile secretion and acting as a prebiotic. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of dietary sorbitol on weanling pig performance, frequency of diarrhea, nutrient digestibility and economic feasibility. One hundred twenty 21 day-weaned pigs will be used in a complete block design experiment with five treatments, eight replications and three animals per experimental unit. Treatments will be: T1: basal diet (BD), T2: DB with 0.5% sorbitol, T3: DB with 1% sorbitol, T4: DB 1.5% sorbitol and T5: DB with 2% sorbitol. (AU)
