Abstract

Hip luxation represents 90% of all luxations in dogs, and is generally unilateral. Primary stability of the hip result from the articular capsule, while hydrostatic pressure, round ligament and muscles surrounding the joint are considered secondary restraints; therefore, hip luxation occurs when both the articular capsule and round ligament fails. Among treatment options, sutures from the ilium to the greater trochanter of the femur have been shown to provide results similar to more sophisticated techniques, however a myriad of modifications have been proposed in order to reestablish hip range of motion. The purpose of this cadaveric study is to determine isometric sites at the iliac body and greater trochanter of the femur by means of radiographic evaluation at the maximal degree of extension and flexion in normal hips and hips with a simulated craniodorsal luxation. The control group will be used to determine the normal range of motion while the opposite joint will be subject to section of the articular capsule and round ligament, followed by luxation of the femoral head. The distance between markers will be evaluated using a pachymeter and expressed as a percentage of variation from the neutral point. A paired T test will be used to compare means between groups.
