Role of TRPV4 channels in thermoregulation

Abstract

The mechanisms involved in body temperature (Tb) regulation, as well as how the ambient temperature (Ta) influence different physiological and physiopathologic functions, are extremely important for homeostasis maintenance, as temperature influences most, if not all physiological and physiopathological functions. The mechanisms responsible for Ta and Tc detection, although known to be essential for adequate thermoregulation, are still not completely understood. With the recent discovery of the temperature sensitive TRP (transient receptor potential) channels (thermo-TRP), a great advance on the understanding of these mechanisms is expected to be achieved. The present research proposal aims at investigating the effects of pharmacological manipulation of TRPV4 channels (sensitive to temperatures ranging from 27 to 33°C) in the Tb response, as well as at analyzing the thermoeffector profile of this response evaluating heat production and loss mechanisms (i.e. brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and vasomotor tone in the cutaneous tail surface, respectively).
