Movement of cadmium and lead on soil columns due to landfill leachate disposal

Abstract

With industrial process intensification, the humanity has been produced significant amounts of wastes, due to a very complex mixture and nature of materials. If the garbage is discarded on inadequate sites (what still happens for the majority of Brazilian municipals), diverse environmental problems may occur. The leachate liquid percolation through soil may be considered the most important environmental issue concerning sanitary landfill management, because the considerable pollution it can cause when reaches the soil and the superficial and subsurface waters. Leachate chemical composition depends on the waste constitution. Among various materials that may be found on garbage, there are batteries and electric cells (despite selective collecting recommendations). These materials may have considerable heavy metals contents. Among the heavy metals that may be found on garbage (and thus on landfill leachate), the cadmium and the lead deserve attention due to environmental impacts that they may cause. Due to the high toxicity of cadmium and lead (and respective compounds), acts to prevent and to repair environment contaminations are common nowadays. This work aims to study the movement of cadmium and lead on soil columns from landfill leachate disposal. The specific objectives are: (i) To study the soils and horizons influence of on the movement; (ii) to study the soil pH influence and (iii) to study the influence of the metal transport fluid. (AU)
