Abstract
The area of nonlinear optics, although still under development, has been receiving a great deal of attention due to its potential for the development of new technologies as well as for the understanding of fundamental aspects of light-matter interaction. This area has been driven by the development of femtosecond laser pulses, which present short duration and, consequently, high peak power irradiance and broad spectral band. This project aim at the study of nonlinear opticas processes induced by femtosecond pulses, addressing three distinct topics: (i) nonlinear spectroscopy, (ii) coherent control of light-matter interaction and (iii) ultrashort pulses microfabrication. Thus, the execution of this project will provide the foundation for the establishment of a research group competitive in nonlinear optics and ultrashort pulses at an international level. Although the three proposed research lines presented here are parallel, as the project evolves they will certainly be mutually beneficial. For example, pulse shaping methods can be applied to microfabrication and the information obtained through nonlinear spectroscopy can be used to help the other experiments. This project falls in a research area of fundamental relevance for the generation of new technologies, but also covers aspects of great interest from the standpoint of fundamental physics. (AU)
