Abstract
Due to economic and social importance that the citrus industry represents for the country, and in particular to the State of São Paulo, the trees may be affected by various pathogenic agents which, acting alone or together, under favorable conditions may become limiting yield in many regions. Among those pathogenic agents stand out Penicillium digitatum, P. italicum and Endomyces geotrichum (anamorph Geotrichum candidum), responsible for diseases that occur in postharvest citrus. The most effective method for controlling the disease is the chemical by means of fungicides, but alternative methods are needed due to concerns about environmental and human health risks associated with fungicides residues. Among the alternative methods, the biological control has emerged as one of the most promising methods. Thus, this work has by aim to: (i) isolate, select and identify yeasts from leaves, flowers and citrus fruits, with potential application as biological control agents for pathogens that occur in postharvest; (ii) identify possible mechanisms involved in biological control of the yeast (volatile compounds, competition) and finally (iii) evaluate the control in vivo of fungi P. digitatum, P. italicum and E. geotrichum in citrus using the yeast isolates that showed the best results in vitro antagonism.
