Abstract

Cortical auditory evoked potentials provide advantages over the more popular techniques such as brainstem auditory evoked potentials. The answers are captured near the site where they are generated, providing waves of greater amplitude, which may be registered with the subject in a state of alert and, especially, for use with both tonal and speech stimuli. These potentials provide valuable information on the perception of auditory stimuli. The advancement of newborn hearing screening programs allows access to more early intervention, and the increasing aging population is exposed to a greater cognitive and auditory impairment. These movements generate a growing demand for techniques for objective evaluation of auditory perception in individuals unable to respond by means of behavioral techniques that do or do not wear a hearing aid. With this approach, the Australian National Acoustic Laboratory (NAL) has developed the "HEARLab" equipment with innovative technology that utilizes electrodes with pre-amplifier, especially designed to significantly reduce electrical interference, and provide automatic statistical analysis of cortical response, that enables its clinical application. The objective of this project is to develop a protocol for the use of cortical auditory evoked potential in automatic analysis equipment response, in the estimation of hearing thresholds and speech detection in the selection process and verification of hearing aids in individuals with hearing loss. The assessment will include 60 adults, 30 with normal hearing and 30 with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss. LLAEP tonal and speech stimuli will be captured and recorded. This study will allow the use of valuable clinical tools in the selection and verification of hearing aids in difficult subjects to be tested, including infants, young children who have not developed language skills, patients with multiple disorders, as well as adults and older people unable to respond.
