Abstract
The present research has as it main purpose the sistematic revision of the bivalve assemblages from the lower part of Corumbataí Formation, Passa Dois Group, Permian of Paraná Basin, Brazil. This study will be the base for the bioestratigraphic refinement previously proposed by Rohn (1984) and for the proposition of an evolutive model of the bivalve faunas from Paraná Basin during permian times (Simões et al. 1998). The best records of this assemblages occurs at Rio Claro-Piracicaba region, in exposed limestone quarries of Irati Formation. The bivalves of the lower portion of Corumbataí Formation, included in the Anhembia froesi assemblage, are a key part of the knowledge for the understanding of the evolution of the endemic fauna preserved in the entire Passa Dois Group, as they are the first representatives preserved after the extensive euxinic event seen in the black shales of Irati Formation. Therefore, the assemblage represents the beginning of the intrabasinal adaptive radiation that led to the great morphologic disparity observed in the bivalves of the overlying assemblage Pinzonella illusa. Although well known specially by the studies of Maranhão (1986, 1995), Maranhão & Petri (1996) e Simões & Anelli (1995), Simões & Mello (1996), Ghillardi et al. (1997) e Simões et al. (1997, 2000a), the majority of the fauna remains inadequately described. In fact, many of the taxa erected during the 1980s are represented by nomina nuda. Therefore, the execution of this project will involve the following specific objectives: a - detailed morphological description and classification of bivalve mollusks ;b- the taphonomic and paleoautoecologic studies of the fauna, c- the interpretation of the data considering the recognized biozones of Passa Dois Group bivalves, and d- the analysis of the implication for the evolutionary model of the Permian endemic bivalve faunas of the Paraná Basin.
