Abstract

The peripheral nerve injury in humans often results in persistent or chronic neuropathic pain characterized by spontaneous burning pain accompanied by allodynia and hyperalgesia. The inferior alveolar nerve injury used in this project is related to routine dental practice for being a constant target of anesthetics used in treatment of lower teeth, and the proximity of their way to the region of surgical extraction of third molar teeth. This is of great relevance to the dentist because it causes physiological and psychological disorders, in addition to frequent loss of sensation and pain. Experimental studies have been developed to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of nerve regeneration and its complications. In this project we will associate basic research to clinical application. We use the model of peripheral nerve injury to the face which associates with laser therapy to stimulate nerve repair in experimental animals and patients undergoing dental procedures and for some reason had injuries of the inferior alveolar nerve and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Still, we evaluate the pain sensitivity before induction of injury, and after treatment with laser therapy. So we hope to increase the knowledge of the mechanisms of nerve repair during treatment with laser therapy, this may contribute to the development of a more efficient treatment protocol in patients with neuropathic pain.
