SocTecBPM: a sociotechnical approach to business process management

Abstract

This research project aims at conducting studies on Business Process Management (BPM) in Brazilian organizations relying upon an approach capable of analyzing in an integrated fashion the technological artefacts and their social, political and organizational implications. The main motivation for this research is analyzing projects of process formalization in BPM according to a sociotechnical approach with the goal of: a) building a deep understanding of questions concerning flexibility and strategic alignment in BPM based on cases studies of BPM projects in Brazilian organizations; b)Based on the case studies, proposing improvements in current BPM tools and methodologies. As such, the result of this research will not only inform and improve the practice of BPM in Brazil, but will also offer subsides for the design of technology to effectively support the organizational and social practices involved.
