Abstract

Aquifers hosted in basaltic rocks represent an important source for groundwater supply in several parts of the world, mainly due the low salinity of their waters and the amount of water stored, function of the regional extension of the volcanic lava flows reachs and their thickness. In Brazilian territory an important magmatic event took place during the early Mesozoic period in the Paraná Sedimentary Basin, represented by the basalts of the Serra Geral Formation, which constitutes an important aquifer in its occurrence area. In the western portion of São Paulo state Serra Geral Aquifer (SGA) is responsible by the water supply in several cities located over this unit. The main purpose of this project is to study the hidrochemistry and isotopic composition of the SGA groundwater's in the São Paulo state, with the aim to set up a geochemical model for the chemical reactions which occur in the aquifer due the interaction water-rock, which are responsible by the hidrochemical characteristics of these groundwater, as well evaluate the past recharge conditions by the isotopic content variations. This research project encompasses groundwater chemical and isotopic analysis, as well petrographic and mineralogical studies of the basalts. Classical methods to interpret chemical and isotopic data from groundwater will be employed, as statistical and graphic methods. Speciation and geochemical modeling will be achieved using specific software. (AU)
