Removal efficiency in filtration and backwash processes for pressurized sand filter

Abstract

The filtration and backwash process in sand filters are based in different operating mechanisms and not using of technical parameters to determine adequate values of filtration and backwash rate for specific sand particle size, results in ineffectiveness of the process from the energy and removal efficiency of the equipment standpoint, increasing the probability of emitters obstruction. In this context, the objective of this research is to contribute with technical-scientific information about the variation of removal efficiency in the filtration and backwash processes of a commercial model of sand filter, in different operation conditions and sand particle sizes, for a level of water contamination. To achieve this objective, a field evaluation will be performed to determine the effect of the operation flow and sand particle size, in the removal efficiency and head loss behavior in a sand filter, in the filtration and backwash processes, characterizing the dirtiness degree before and after of the achievements. As a result, it is expected to indicate useful depths of the filter layer by the dirtiness degree estimation through the porous media bed, and to determine the required backwash time to reach appropriate removal efficiencies to reestablish the initial conditions of the equipment operation.
