Abstract
Associating the luminescence from lanthanides ions, optimized by antenna effect imposed for specific ligands, with the nanoparticles physical-chemistry properties enables to obtain luminescent nanoprobes for bio-molecular identification. The nanoparticles provide a chemically and mechanically stable vehicle, which can protect the encapsulated rare earth ions from external perturbations (decreasing the luminescence quenching process) and its surface modification can become them biocompatible, a further request for biotechnology essays. The use of lanthanides ions allows applications where the luminescence measurement can be accomplished with temporary resolution, taking to a significant increase in the signal/noise ratio since europium and terbium complexes present excited states lifetimes of some milliseconds. This project can be divided in two parts. The first part involves academic studies and the second one, biotechnology applications. In all scope of this project, it is intended to develop, by the sol-gel methodology and spray pyrolysis process, the synthesis of luminescent nanoparticles with application in immunocytochemistry protocols. The particles, doped with lanthanide ions or its complexes, will be studied and the luminescence properties optimized by the coherent design of ligands and macro-structures. The biocompatibility and specificity of these particles requested for immunoassays will be achieved by the monoclonal antibody functionalization. (AU)
