Epidemiological survey of dizziness prevalence in the city of São Paulo

Abstract

Objectives: This epidemiological survey is aimed to determine the prevalence of dizziness in adult population in the county of São Paulo, to describe main clinical characteristics of dizziness in this population, to quantify the level of discomfort of the symptom in the population, and to identify socio-demographic indicators as well as the co-morbidities related to the presence of dizziness. Methods: This cross study will be carried out from August 2011 to July 2013 in the city of São Paulo. To determine the prevalence of dizziness a field questionnaire will be applied. The occurrence measure will be evaluated by the number of individuals feeling dizziness against the total number of investigated individuals. The project will be carried out according to ESOMAR International Code on Market and Social Research. The sample size for the study will be calculated estimating the expected prevalence of dizziness in 10% population, with 2% accuracy, 95% CI, 2-design effect, and 10% increase for possible losses. The necessary final sample size will be 1901 inhabitants. The conglomerate sampling will be applied among the different census sectors. The visits to the homes, interviews and structured population questionnaire application will be carried out by the research-proficient company. Main predictor variables to be evaluated will be gender, education level, smoking habit, occupation, hearing symptoms, presence of co-morbidities, medication consumption, defined as qualitative variables. Quantitative variables include the level of discomfort of dizziness, measured according to the Disability Index. (AU)
