Testicular degeneration treatment in ram with vitamin and mineral supplementation or low intensity laserterapy

Abstract

Testicular degeneration can lead to subfertility, infertility or even sterility in rams. The major cause of this illness is the increase of testicular temperature caused by a testicular thermoregulation. Although the treatment consists in removing the causative agent, the prognosis depends on the time of exposure to the agent and the degree of; so, agents that stimulate the renewal of the seminiferous epithelium can contribute to the reversion of that status. The supplementation whit vitamin A (vit.A), vitamin E (vit. E), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), helps the renewal of the seminiferous epithelium and the reduction of the reactive oxygen species concentration, therefore, can be used in the treatment of testicular; on the other hand, the use of low intensity laserterapy (LT) stimulates the cellular mitosis, it also could help in the reversion of the testicular degeneration status. This project has the purpose of advocating a treatment for testicular degeneration in rams using vitamin and mineral supplementation or laserterapy. Will be used 24 rams divided in 6 treatment groups: 1)control: not degenerated and untreated, 2) not degenerated and supplemented with vitamins A and E, selenium and zinc, 3) not degenerated and treated with low intensity laserterapy, 4) degenerated and untreated, 5) degenerated and supplemented whit vitamins A and E, selenium and zinc, 6) degenerated and treated with low intensity. During the experimental period there will be weekly analysis, including: andrologic exams, testicular e retal temperature evaluation, sonografic evaluation of the testicular parenchyma (B-mode) and testicular vascularization (Doppler mode), testosterone and cortisol mensuration. It will be preconized testicular biopisis in strategic moments. The data will be submited ta a variance analysis employing the statistical program Statistical Analysis System (SAS Institute Inc., 2004), adding the factor repeated measurements over time, the probabilites of interections with the test time will be determined by the Greenhouse-Geisse test, using the REPEATED command generated by the GLM procedure (PROC GLM do SAS).
