Mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: prevalence of oral infection and seric levels of inflammatory parameters

Abstract

Among the evidences of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer´s Disease (AD), the brain inflammation and cytokines remain with undefined role, but can be associated to the development and progression of AD. Studies suggest that peripheral infection and inflammation may alter the inflammatory state of the central nervous system, and among the infections, the oral cavity is often affected. Among the oral infections, periodontitis is a peripheral common infection of anaerobium gram-negative bacteria with the serum increase of inflammatory makers as Reactive C-protein, IL-1², TNF-± and IL-6. Elderly with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may become patients with AD, however little is known about their oral condition. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of oral infections and the serum levels of IL-1², TNF-± and IL-6, Reactive C-Protein and hemossedimentation velocity in 30 patients with AD, 30 patients with MCI compared to 30 controls. The evaluation will include: clinical orofacial evaluation (EDOF-HC), Mini Mental State Exam, Pfeffer questionnaire, periodontal evaluation, DMFT and serum concentration of IL-1², TNF-± and IL-6, Reactive C-Protein and hemossedimentation velocity. Finally, data will be tabbed and statistically analyzed. (AU)
