Abstract

This research addresses the issue of soil and water contamination by hazardous chemicals, which poses significant risks for the environment. Researchers at universities in Sao Paulo (USP and UNIFESP) and universities in Ontario (University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario) have been working on the development of techniques for characterization and remediation of impacted sites. This project will provide the exchange of researchers between these universities, providing the opportunity for sharing the knowledge developed at the different institutions. Each year, one student and two researchers from Brazil will visit the universities in Canada, and researchers and students from Canada will visit the institutions in Brazil. One line of research that will be the focus of this project is bioremediation, with a particular interest on techniques for microbial characterization. Other innovative techniques for soil and water remediation will also be the subject of this research. One of the goals of this exchange of researchers is that it will lead to new collaborations between researchers in Brazil and Canada, involving the joint applications for research funding, exchange of graduate students and joint publications.
