Abstract

The construction waste classified as recyclable or reusable waste as aggregates, are composed of earthmoving, ceramics (bricks, blocks, etc.), mortar, concrete and others. These residues, when crushed, produce aggregates with a chemical composition similar to soil, differing in the absence of essential nutrients to plants and physical and chemical characteristics, such as particle size, density, pH, water retention capacity and storage of ions. However, the separation of particle size through grinding and sieving processes; the fertilizers and organic matter addition and pH adjustment, can allow the use of this waste as a substrate of grasses and ornamental plants in parks and gardens. For this application will be necessary to investigate the physical and chemical composition of waste, quantifying the total and available concentrations of essential and toxic elements, evaluate the agronomic performance with zoysia grass (Zoysia japonica), evaluating productivity parameters, toxicity and nutrient uptake. The experiments will be conducted from an experimental design, which will include variables such as the organic matter concentration, pH, aggregates particle size and the gypsum presence. Environmental risks will be evaluated from leaching experiments, monitoring the species and dissolved concentrations, electrical conductivity, salinity, pH and toxicity using bioassays. The results allow conclusions about the feasibility of using aggregate as a substrate for plants, the economic feasibility and possible risks to the environment. (AU)
