Molecular biodiversity and conservation of sharks: gene bank, population structure and international scientific network of collaboration

Abstract

The latest global assessments about marine fish stocks have shown alarming population declines of several species of sharks and rays, placing them in the lists of imminent risk of extinction. Considering the current lack of information that could enable mitigation measures of this trend and the obvious necessity of combined efforts for the universal conservation of worldwide species, this proposal aims to create an international center of genetic material deposition from elasmobranchs (International Bank of Shark DNA), establishing the first systematic center of management and representative biodiversity of this group, providing a nucleus for genetic studies (NUPEGE - Núcleo de Pesquisas Genéticas em Elasmobrânquios) that could provide knowledge and staff training, inserted into a global researchers network focused on the conservation of sharks and rays. The consolidation of this center is initially structured in the development of studies about genetic diversity and phylogeography using nuclear and mitochondrial markers in species of sharks worldwide distributed, heavily exploited by fishing and classified at some level as threat of extinction.
