Abstract

Two problems are proposed. The first is to investigate what happens when a pair of rigid bodies collide in a fluid. The central question is whether there are impulsive forces, or if the forces of the fluid on the colliding bodies is sufficient to prevent this. Asymptotic analysis should facilitate the development of numerical methods for these situations. The second problem is to investigate numerical methods for handling Coulomb frictional contact between elastic and viscoelastic bodies. Simulations with suitable methods can provide information about frictional instabilities in these problems. (AU)
