Abstract

The consumption of quality water is essential for the human survival. Facing the current situation of scarcity and poor quality of available water, a great challenge is to develop treatment Technologies, ensuring adequate Standards of consumption and release to the water bodies. An effective alternative treatment of water is the cavitating jet apparatus. This equipment uses a high velocity jet, generating cavitation. Usually considered harmful to hydraulic systems, this Project presents a useful use for the cavitation phenomenon. The objective of this Project is to develop a cavitating jet apparatus with multiple jets for water disinfection. The parameters that define the formation of the cavitating jet, such as pressure, velocity and nozzle configurations will be studied and tested in an experimental set up in the Laboratory of Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism at UNICAMP. To perform the disinfection tests, it will be used the bacteria (nonpathogenic) Escherichia coli. It should be stated that this research is within a research group, in which a Mastered student, Maiara Pereira Assis, was awarded with a schoolarship supported by FAPESP (2011/16347-4). (AU)
