Origins and significance of technoscience: on relations among science, technology and society

Abstract

The central objective of the project is to investigate critically the roles played by ethical and social values, whether held by individuals or embodied in institutions, in current scientific and technological practices. This central objective encompasses others objectives: to investigate the changes that have occurred in recent decades in the modes of social production of technoscientific knowledge, the way in which these changes have affected the status of the values of objectivity, neutrality, and autonomy that have traditionally been adhered to by the scientific community, and the function of intellectual property rights in this process; to investigate how these new technoscientific conceptions and practices are implemented in specific sectors of the working sphere (as in nanotechnology and biotechnology) , and in education (particularly in the universities); to research the history of the relationship between science and technology in the modernity, specially the role played by machines and mechanistic ideas; to investigate theoretical problems (distinction between natural and artificial, biological identity etc.), and practical (ethical criticisms, alternative proposals etc.) concerning biotechnology by means of an approach that combines philosophy, biomedicine and ethology; to discuss the alternative practices (e. g., agroecology), the bioethics thematic and the implications of a critical vision of technoscience for the scientific and general education. It is important that these investigations be open to the wider possible range of different perspectives. To this end we will plan a series of events and publications, bringing together for constructive and rational discussion scientists, philosophers and social scientists of divergent methodological approaches and ethical outlooks, in order to ensure that a wide range of viewpoints are considered in the investigations, and to explore how the results obtained may impact positively on scientific research, the teaching of science, and higher education.
