Abstract

Denture stomatitis (DS) is a common condition in edentulous patients and often associated with a wide range of risk factors. The presence of Candida spp. and denture biofilm are frequently mentioned as significant factors, leading to the need for oral hygiene instructions as part of the therapy. Within that context, the importance of denture hygiene instructions is consensual; however, there is little evidence suggesting or refuting the efficacy/effectiveness of oral mucosa hygiene as a treatment approach for DS. Therefore, this protocol aims to evaluate the efficacy of palatal brushing as a treatment for DS, taking clinical and microbial parameters into account. A single group will be formed by edentulous patients wearing a pair of complete dentures and diagnosed with DS and treated by a palatal hygiene regimen using toothbrushes with soft bristles. The primary outcome will be the partial or complete remission of DS's clinical severity according to the Budtz-Jorgensen and Bertram classification, and to the modified Newton classification. Secondary outcomes will be Candida albicans counts from palatal mucosa smears and detached biofilm from maxillary complete dentures. In the Brazilian centre, secondary outcomes will also comprise counts of 38 bacterial and 5 Candida species by the checkerboard DNA hybridization technique. Outcomes will be assessed before palatal brushing and following 1 and 3 months. Statistical comparisons will determine significant differences among the three periods considered, if any (±=0,05).
