Abstract

The objective of this project is to employ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in the diagnosis of cancerous lesions and in the chemical characterization of laser-irradiated enamel and dentine. The first subproject will employ FTIR, which is recognized as a useful technique for cancer diagnosis, but in this project it will be associated with paraffin-embedded samples, which are routinely employed in pathology laboratories but not in FTIR analysis. Currently, there is only one research group working with this association; i.e., FTIR and paraffin-embedded samples and, according to this research team, this technique is disseminating quickly because the use of such kind of samples in FTIR analysis is viable for cancer diagnosis. The second subproject is proposed on the basis of previous works, where we have identified a possible correlation of water loss and enamel opacity with dentin browning and collagen degradation. Herein we propose the validation of this hypothesis and provide irradiation parameters showing that these changes are reversible for some lasers parameters. Additionally, we will determine the collagen degradation by Er:YAG laser-irradiated dentin and the loss of carbonate in the enamel after CO2-10.6µm and Nd:YAG laser irradiation at subsurface regions. The expected results are interesting when it comes to the improvement of irradiation parameters for restorative procedures using Er:YAG lasers and also of parameters for caries prevention using CO2-10.6µm and Nd:YAG lasers.
