Influence of post diameter and crown ferule on tension distribution in unirradiculary endodontically treated teeth. analysis by 2-D and 3-D finite element method

Abstract

The reconstruction of endodontically treated teeth often requires the use of post and cores for restoring aesthetics and function. The selection of an appropriate post/core system is a clinical dilemma, since the widespread of factors that influences the post/core selection. However, the biomechanical behavior of endodontically treated teeth is highly depending on the selected restorative material and location of the restored tooth. So, the aim of this work is to analyze, through 2-D and 3-D finite element method, the stress distribution of different types of post/core system used to restore uniradicular endodontically treated tooth with different ferrule types. Groups will be divided into: endodontically treated tooth, rebuilt with metallic core (MC), fiberglass post (FGP) and carbon fiber post (CFP) by varying the thickness and the remainder ferrule. For this, it was simulated 28 2-D and 3-D models obtained from CT scans of a single-rooted tooth, and modeled with the computer assisted design software Rhinoceros 4.0 (McNeel, Seattle, WA, USA). The 2D and 3D models will be exported to the finite element software FEMAP v.10.2 (Siemens Product Lifecycle Management Software Inc.USA) to determine contact regions and finite element mesh generation. The loads will be applied axially (100N) and oblique (100N) with a 45 angle degrees to the tooth long axis in the contact region with the antagonist, about 2 mm below the incisal edge. The results will be displayed through von Mises tension and maximum principal tension maps in order to assess the individual variations of the stress distribution in dentin, in the post and in the crown/core interface.
