Heritability of Metabolic Phenotypes in the Brazilian Population

Abstract

Metabolomic analysis is the systematic analysis of metabolites in biological samples. The metabolic level of diverse substances can be used as valuable complement for understanding gene function and regulation, and can be used as quantitative phenotype for gene-mapping experiments. This type of analysis is being used in several biological specimens aiming at identifying biomarkers for several human conditions. NMR can be used to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a particular sample metabolite profile. This project aims at identifying different serum metabolites in human samples and establish the heritability values of these different compounds. In this proposal we will analyze the fasting serum of 1,500 individuals from a family-based study already conducted by our group. The metabolite profile will be established using NMR methods in collaboration with researches from the Laboratorio Nacional de Luz Sincontron and the statistic analysis will use a variance components method already mastered by our group and available in the SOLAR package.
