Abstract
The problems with lack of water for human use and for agricultural use is growing in the worldwide. In the northwestern region of São Paulo State, more precisely in the municipalities of Urupês and Termas de Ibirá, the problems occur primary during the summer due to increased of use of water and the lack of aquifer groundwater recharge. The wells drilled in these regions (usually < 200 m deep) have low flow (~10 - 35m3/h) and exploit water from the sedimentary aquifer related to the shallow sandy sediments of Adamantina Formation, Paraná sedimentary Basin. On the other hand, the fractured aquifer in the basalt of the Serra Geral Formation is little known and little exploited, and there are few wells that exploit water from this aquifer system, and this constitutes an excellent target for exploration of groundwater to local supply. In this way, the studies will be done through of 1D and 2D joint inversion of resistivity data (VES and ES) and time domain electromagnetic soundings (TDEM), to map the shallow sedimentary aquifer and fractured aquifer in basalts of Serra Geral Formation. This procedure is novel and can contribute effectively to the development of hidrogeophysics research in São Paulo State and in Brazil. The results will help to minimize the ambiguities in the interpretation of geophysical data, and have important implications for hydrogeological studies, for example, in the mapping of shallow sedimentary aquifer, in the location of sub-horizontal fracture zones in the basalt layers, in the mapping of the basalt layer thickness (e.g., structural contour map), in the orientation of wells aimed at the exploitation of groundwater in the Serra Geral Aquifer System (fractured aquifer). Financial support are requested to: i) air ticket for the foreign collaborator (Dr. Fernando A. Monteiro dos Santos (University of Lisbon, Portugal) expert in joint inversion/interpretation of data that will stay 13 days in Sao Paulo to discuss the results, and greater integration with the faculty of the Department of Geophysics of the IAG/USP, ii) a microcomputer, iii) a portable GPS equipment and iv) funding for fieldwork activities.Important note: this research project is a continuation of research conducted under the Project supported by FAPESP (Grant 2009/08466-3) already completed, where five students, a Doctoral (Cassiano Antonio Bortolozo), FAPESP scholarship (2011/06404-0), two Masters Science David Nakamura Leite, CNPq scholarship and Marco Antonio Couto Jr, CAPES scholarship and two undergraduate students are developing their research with data that will be acquired in this research project.
