Abstract

In the interpretation of geophysical data the ambiguities in the interpretation are always present. One way to reduce the ambiguities is the use of various geophysical methods, to obtain a redundancy of information in the studied area. Thus it is possible to make an integrated interpretation of the different results by joint inversion of data from the different methods. The joint inversion of the data is more effective if the methods use the same physical property. In the case of electrical resistivity method (ER) and time domain electromagnetic (TEM), the electrical resistivity is the common physical property. The objective of this research project is to contribute to the solution of the problem of lack of water supply for local communities, guiding the exploration of sedimentary aquifers in the Paraná sedimentary basin in the São Paulo State, specifically in the regions of the cities of Urupês and Termas de Ibirá by means of 1D and 2D joint inversion of ER and TEM data. This procedure will be employed in an unprecedented way in this research and can contribute effectively to the development of research in São Paulo State and in Brazil. It is noteworthy that this doctoral research project is a continuity of the research carried out under the Project supported by FAPESP entitled "Geoelectrical characterization of aquifers in fractured basalts in the region of Bebedouro-SP by means of joint inversion of VES and TEM soundings" (grant n. 2009/08466-3) and that will be part of a future project of Prof. Jorge Porsani that will be submitted to FAPESP in August 2011, where the resources necessary to cover the field travels expenses will be include.
