Abstract

Individuals with dentofacial deformities present myofunctional orofacial. It is known that the tongue exerts different pressures and strength in the oral structures such as teeth and palate, both in situations function as in the usual position of rest. This study aims to investigate the maximum tongue strength and the tongue strength exerted on swallowing in various dentofacial deformities, compared with controls and differences between genders as well as analyzing the relationship between tongue forces in different equipment. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the institution. Participate in the study, 100 adult volunteers of both sexes, without distinction of race and socioeconomic status, with good oral language comprehension, without cognitive disorders or mental disabilities. Participants will be selected in a public hospital, after informed consent. Form the experimental group, 30 volunteers with facial deformity standard class II and class III standard 30 volunteers, with an indication for orthognathic surgery. The control group will consist of 40 volunteers with no change in dental occlusion and without clinical signs of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. All volunteers will undergo an interview and clinical assessment of morphology and oral functions. Will be held to measure the strength of the tongue using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) for evidence of maximum strength of lift, tongue protrusion and lateralization, and the swallowing test and fatigue of the tongue. Through gnatodinamômetro Kratos model DDK / M, will be carried out the maximum strength of the anterior and dorsal tongue. In each event will be recorded three consecutive measurements of strength for 2 seconds, by applying the maximum strength, with rest intervals of 1 min between each test. For statistical analysis, the maximum values will be used in tests of maximum strength and evidence of swallowing and fatigue are used averages. Will be used analysis of variance and correlation test, considering differences significant P <0.05, using the SAS software, version 9. (AU)
