Analytical and environmental studies of the spatial, seasonal and temporal distribution of the low molar weight aldehydes in the atmosphere of the Sorocaba region

Abstract

The low molar weight aldehydes are of great interest for environmental chemistry not only for its adverse effect on health, but because, beyond being emitted directly they are products of photochemical reactions (smog photochemical) and are therefore indirect indicators of local atmospheric air quality. The present project has as objective to developed and optimize new analytical methods and then apply them in identifying the major sources and to evaluate the concentration of these pollutants in atmosphere of Sorocaba region, being traced a spatial, seasonal and temporal profile. The aldehydes sampling are made using passive and active samplers and will be determined by capillary electrophoresis (CE) as main analytical technique. The passive samplers are suitable for this work, since they are low cost and easy use. Active sampling also will be used in order to complement the results of passive sampler, for example, for the evaluation of aldehydes behavior throughout the day and search for possible emission sources. The developed methodology will be applied to evaluate the quality in indoor air. (AU)
