Breast density in women with premature ovarian failure in use of hormone therapy: analysis of 3 or more years

Abstract

Premature ovarian failure (POF) causes consequences related to prolonged state of hypoestrogenism, with precise indication of hormone replacement to minimize such changes. Studies in postmenopausal women and risk of breast cancer brings concerns and decrease adherence of women with POF to hormonal treatment, and there are few studies on the action of the hormone medication on the breast of the women Objective: To evaluate the effects of hormone therapy with estrogen associated with progestin on breast density in women with premature ovarian failure. Subjects and Methods: There will be a study of women diagnosed with FOP attended the Endocrine Clinic of Gynecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, State University of Campinas in the last ten years, use of hormone therapy with E + P, who have performed mammography in the ambulatory care over the years in at least two times, with a difference of three or more years. Will be compared to the first mammography performed with the last available for each woman. After locating these mammograms in the department of archives of the institution, will be analyzed by a breast cancer specialist, blindly, without information on the time of mammography, which classifies mammographic density by the method of Wolfe, and mark the areas to be posteriomente scanned to quantify the scanning technique of mammographic images. Data are also collected at time of premature ovarian failure, age, parity, time and type of use of hormone therapy, BMI at all times, and the time between mammograms. Statistical Analysis: Data will be evaluated as mean, standard deviation, median, and prevalence (nominal variables). Comparison of breast density before and after treatment are assessed by paired Student's t test (for interval measure) and by the chi-square test of McNemar (for criterion WOLF). It will be assumed significance level of 5% and the software used for analysis will be SAS version 9.2. (AU)
