Abstract

The pediatric rheumatic diseases are considered rare illnesses since affect less than other children's diseases. However, they are associated with high morbidity and high financial and social impact, causing physical disability and functional, and affecting the quality of life of patients. Among the lupus erythematosus clinical manifestations are fever, arthralgia, arthritis, myalgia, lymphadenopathy, weight loss and anemia. The decrease in muscle strength, and / or atrophy, may be a symptom of the disease, but may also occur as a complication of treatment of prolonged use of corticosteroids. Up to the present time, it is not known the influence of the disease in the etiology of malocclusion and the facial pattern in these subjects. There is a lack of studies to investigate the influence of steroid treatment for facial muscles in these patients. In this study, we propose to describe the malocclusion in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus in a Rheumatology Children center, with clinical orthodontic evaluation and magnetic resonance imaging using volumetry of some mastication muscles. This study will pave the way for further collaborative projects and the beginning of a UNICID Research Group at School of Medicine, UNICAMP. (AU)
