Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that affect different tissues and organs, including the salivary glands which have similar biological structure, in some respects, to pancreas. Current studies have used immunomodulators in an attempt to reverse the tissue damage caused by the hyperglycaemic condition. However, the toxic effects and risks of immune suppression are a limitation to use of these drugs. Thus, is necessary the continuous search for other therapies, with less risk and more effectives to control the diabetes and especially to the reversal of lesions associated to this condition. Then, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of treatment with peptides P217 and p290 of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) on the cells responsible by production of saliva in parotid and submandibular glands of diabetic mice, observing mainly the therapeutic effect on recovery of interaction between insulin and receptors in these tissues. A total of 21 mice will be divided into 3 groups: Group I, with 7 Balb / C (controls mice), Group II, with 7 NOD (diabetic mice) and the Group III with 7 NOD (diabetic mice) that will receive the peptide P217 and P290 of glutamic acid decarboxylase. During treatment in all animals will analysed the solid and liquid intake and glucose levels. After the experimental period, samples of salivary tissues will be processed to morphological analysis, and also immunofluorescence and immunoblotting for insulin receptors (AU)
