Abstract

Saliva is an important fluid for the maintenance of oral homeostasis. It is produced and secreted by the salivary glands. The submandibular gland plays a major role in this process by contributing about 60% of the total secreted saliva during the rest. This salivary gland uses glucose as the main source of energy, and the Krebs cycle as the source of amino acids for protein synthesis. In diabetic rats we have already shown a reduction in the activity of glycolysis and the krebs cycle and a decrease in the mucin concentration of saliva at rest, without reduction of salivary flow. These findings show the relationship between energy metabolism and salivary secretion. Associated with this, there is no information regarding the use of lipids as an energetic source of this gland, despite the importance of this pathway in the diabetic state in other tissues. Knowing the important role of insulin as a positive effector in several enzymes and the huge and severe systemic changes due to Hyperglycemia in the diabetic state, the objective of this study is to verify the effect of Diabetes and insulin on the expression, quantity and activity of key enzymes of glycolytic metabolism, glycogen metabolism, Krebs cycle and lipid metabolism in the submandibular glands of diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin and its controls, and the role of insulin in the possible alterations found in these groups.
