Development of platform with mucoadhesive systems for drug release on the buccal cavity

Abstract

This proposal aims to develop a platform of mucoadhesive systems for topical/local release of drugs in the oral cavity. The study has as its starting point the use of anesthetic drugs in order to replace the injectable anesthetic in dental procedures. It will be developed and compared: i.fast-dissolving tablets, ii. films and iii. semi-solid mucoadhesive systems. The formulations will be characterized physical and physicochemically, and in vitro and ex vivo tests will be performed to assess whether the formulations present suitable properties. Moreover, we will investigate the potential of the application of iontophoresis to modulate the release rate, permeation and to maintain the effect of the drugs from the films and semi-solid formulations. In all cases, statistical tools will be used to the experimental design and selection of formulations with improved characteristics. It is expected that at the set time, the development of this research project contemplates: knowledge generation (undergraduate research work,master dissertation and doctoral thesis) scientific papers published in national and international journals; presentation in scientific meetings; technological advancement through the filing of a patent application; formation of highly qualified human resources in the Pharmaceutical science; strengthening and consolidation of research team in a strategic area for the country.
