Abstract

Academic performance is a growing concern for the education community. School failure is a core problem and so the early school drop out that follows. In the Brazilian national curriculum Math courses have a high failure rate, as shown by national and international exams: the PISA study indicates that Brazil is almost the last ranked of the participating nations. The SAEB results (2005) points to the same direction: low Math proficiency levels for the fifth and ninth years of K12. According to this scenario, this study aims to answer "how could new technologies, namely hypermedia applications running on mobile devices, improve learning self-regulation and help students to succeed in Math?" This study will use hypermedia tools to teach some primary education Mathematics topics with the aid of a tutor/avatar. It is expected an improvement of students learning and performance, as well as better self-regulatory skills. This research is part of an international study joining Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian universities. (AU)
