Abstract

Brazilian families that traditionally care for their elderly have undergone changes in its structure and functioning. As a result, there is an increase in the search for places in Institutions of Long Term Elderly. Institutionalization in Institutions of Long Term Elderly can interfere in quality of life (QOL) of residents. Thus, measures are needed to assess and investigate how an Institutions of Long Term Elderly improve or not the quality of life for its residents. The World Health Organization defines QOL as "the individual's perception of their position in life in the context of culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns." The main goal of this research is to perform the translation, adaptation and validation of the Quality of Life Scales for Nursing Home Residents in the Brazilian context. The entire validation process was authorized by the American researcher who built the scale. This is a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional research. It will be developed in Institutions of Long Term Elderly in São Carlos, in the state of São Paulo, during the years of 2013 and 2014. Currently the São Carlos has six Institutions of Long Term Elderly, three private and three philanthropic, totaling 225 institutionalized elderly. The subjects are people aged over 60 years of both sexes, living in ILTE. Will be excluded elderly comatose, vegetative, with hearing deficit or severe speech and severe cognitive deficit. Translation, adaptation and validation will follow the following steps (Guillemin, et al., 1993): 1 - initial translation; 2 - synthesis of translations, 3 - back-translation; 4 - review by a committee of experts; 5 - pretest; 6 - presentation and evaluation of reports of cross-cultural adaptation process; 7 - evaluation of the psychometric properties of the instrument, after its translation and cross-cultural adaptation. In steps 5 and 7 it will be applied the instrument Quality of Life Scales for Nursing Home Residents in elderly residents in ILTE in São Carlos city who agreed to participate in the study, signing the Term of Free Consent, respecting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection will be preceded by training of researchers who will apply the instruments. The collection will be held in a private place to be defined in advance by the institution. It will be used the following instruments: Quality of Life Scales for Nursing Home Residents; Quality Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index - PSQI, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Data will be pre-coded and organized in a database on double-entry with comparison of values, using the program Excel. The processing and analysis of data will be made using the statistical program Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency (single frequency, mean, median, minimum and maximum) and dispersion (standard deviation). It will also be checked for internal consistency of the Quality of Life Scales for Nursing Home Residents through Cronbach's alpha coefficient. It will also be performed a correlation analysis between the instruments used in the project. The significance level for statistical tests will be 5%. Regarding ethical issues, the project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of São Carlos (Report. #92,004) and will respect the resolution 96/1996. (AU)
