Biological aspects of Nyssomyia neivai (Diptera: Psychodidae) and improvements in laboratory colonization techniques

Abstract

Some sand fly species (Diptera:Psychodidae), vectors of leishmaniasis, are considered difficult to breed or present low productivity in laboratory. Such limitations hinder bioassays which need a large number of insects. The sand fly species Nyssomyia neivai (=Lutzomyia neivai), considered as vector of American cutaneous leishmaniasis, is one of those species. Attempts to maintain this species in the laboratory are scarce, followed protocols used for other species of sand flies and showed high mortality rates. The present study will investigate possible alternatives along the life cycle of N. neivai with the aim of increasing the knowledge of the basic biology of this species and improve breeding techniques to make them more specific and efficient. Basically four crucial aspects in the breeding process will be focused: source of blood feeding for females; source of sugar for adults; larval diet for immature stages and the search of oviposition pheromone. Increasing the performance of breeding techniques of N. neivai in laboratory, may stimulate more researches with the physiology, behavior and epidemiology of this species. (AU)
