Datacenter and Biobank deployment at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine as a way to ensure the safety and stability of biological samples and computer network

Abstract

The teaching and research activities are highly dependent on information technologies. However, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine presents great fragility in its computer system, with regard to the security and stability of its connection to the network. Currently, the available resources that allow the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine connectivity are located in the Faculty of Dentistry-UNESP, about four kilometers away, and they have remote access through optical fiber. Repeated incidents of disruption in optical fiber, along its path through the city, has caused the failure of all institutional systems (e-mail serve r, the VoIP telephony and internet connection were off), in other words, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has remained without any communication for several days, during these events. Indeed, 80% of the impact of this kind of accident would be minimized with an own Datacenter. Thus, the present project, whose scope is the acquisition of computer equipment (network servers, rack, hard drives, uninterruptible power supply-UPS, KVM console, as well as air conditioners and access control equipment) that can enable the establishment of the Datacenter, whose facilities will be remodeled and expanded in order to meet the technical standards, by using funds of the University as counterpart. Datacenter deployment will ensure the appropriate conditions for carrying out advanced studies and researches, and also maintain computer network functional, enabling all users to access national and international scientific databases, as well as to access institutional systems and computer services. The FMVA-UNESP-Araçatuba has several ongoing research projects and requires the appropriate location and secure to store biological samples obtained in the different surveys. the creation (BIOBANK) physical environment compatible with the needs that the researchers point out, by the lack of adequate and safe place to promote the storage and preservation of biological samples (blood, serum, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, feces, tissue targeting or not extracting DNA, etc.) obtained by the different searches. This way, if you want to create an infrastructure that strengthens the link between basic and clinical research, aimed at the promotion of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of animals.
