Abstract

Epidemiology is a discipline that studies the occurrence of health-related events in a given population. It has three main functions: To describe patterns of health and diseases, interpret these differences and apply the results in public health as well as to evaluate the effect of interventions related to health. Without the knowledge and use of epidemiological methodology and statistics, health research projects will not be developed properly and often the results may be based due to methodological shortcomings in the study design and data analysis. Therefore, for improve scientific publications in the area of health research, particularly clinical research involving human subjects, is of fundamental importance the use of epidemiological and statistical methods. A part of our strategy for improving research activities at the Hospital, we offer to our investigators, support in the field of epidemiology and statistics, under coordination of Dr. Ana Luiza Bierrenbach, medical epidemiologist and our faculty member. This involvement of professionals has occurred in the area of assessment of projects proposed by researchers at HSL and also supporting specific groups in project development, funding request, conducting research, data analysis, and preparation of abstracts for presentation at conferences and articles for publication. Despite this support that has been provided, there are still important limitation of instructional material and technical expertise in epidemiology and statistics by researchers at the body of HSL. The training activities and acquisition of books and software required will directly contribute to improving the capacity of developing projects and conducting research in HSL acting, and thus enable better collaboration this institution with other research groups in the state of São Paulo and the country.
