Abstract

During November and December 2011 the Applicant of this project (Professor Raquel Gonçalves) participated in the program "Cátedra Espanhola" with funding from SANTANDER-UNICAMP. This participation allowed the continuity of the exchange with researchers Esther Merlo Sanchez (Wood Technological Center for Innovation and Services of the Galicia - CISMADEIRA), Francisco Arriaga Martitegui, Miguel Esteban Herrero e Guillermo Íñiguez (Universidad Politecnica de Madrid - UPM) and also the early exchanges with the researcher Manuel Guaita Fernández from Department of Agroforestry Engineering of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) - Visiting Researcher in this request. At USC (24/11/2011 to 09/12/2011) prof. Raquel gave classes and lecture and participated in activities in the course of Masters in Timber Structural Engineering and also participated in laboratory testing and discussion of methodology and results of research projects developed in the area of characterization of wood for structural applications. These activities have resulted in the elaboration, submission and approval Research Project sponsored by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of the Spanish government, as well as invitation to co-direct the doctoral student Carlos Vazquez at USC. The exchange with the researcher and professor Manuel Guaita also allowed contribution in terms of human resource training. The PhD student Cinthya Bertoldo Pedroso (FAPESP scholarship) made her exchange stage, under the supervision of the Applicant, at USC from November/2011to February/2012, sponsored by CAPES. Is being planned the coming of the USC student Carlos Vazquez (under co-supervise of the Applicant) from February to April 2014 and also the exchange stage at USC, in 2014, of the PhD student from FEAGRI Rafael Mansini Lorenzani (Supervised by the Applicant). Also as a result of work done together (FEAGRI / USC) during our stay in Spain, has been drafted and submitted a paper (Determination of the Mechanical Properties of Castanea Sativa Mill. by Ultrasonic Wave Propagation and Comparison with the Compression Method) for journal Building and Environment co-authored by the Visiting Researcher, the Applicant and doctoral students Cinthya Bertoldo Pedroso (FEAGRI) and Carlos Vazquez (USC). On this background it is believed that the request for supporting the coming of Professor Manuel Guaita to Brazil is justified, since the exchange between USC and UNICAMP has produced important results for both institutions, both in terms of research and in terms of training human resources. The participation of the Visiting Researcher will be done through: 1. Working Meeting for discussion of Research Projects (structure, methodology etc.) and partial results already obtained in other exchange opportunities (Cátedras, PhD stage etc). 2. Participation as a listener in classes to discuss the theoretical basis of wave propagation in materials aimed the determining of mechanical properties (AP 353: Ultrasound applied to the characterization of materials - Theoretical Bases). 3. Short Course (20 hours) done by the researcher on the topic of numerical simulation applied to structural wood, mainly to apply modeling in projects using wood. 4. Official visits in other institutions with the purpose of expanding the network of exchanges with professionals who are working in related areas. This is important not only for FEAGRI/UNICAMP, but also to the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). For this reason USC is also collaborating with funding travel expenses (airfare and internal transfers outside the State of São Paulo). (AU)
