Abstract

Cerebrovascular disease is a common and serious complication in sickle cell disease (SCD), and the management of this neurological complication has been directed with more emphasis on primary prevention of ischemic stroke (ischemic stroke) in children aged 2 to 16 years old. The study of stroke prevention in AF (Stroke prevention Trial in Sicle Cell Disease - Study I STOP 1998) enable the identification of children at risk of acute cerebral event and reduced the occurrence of ischemic stroke from 10% to less than 1% years. In addition, prompt diagnosis and treatment with regular regimen of RBC transfusion reduced the risk of recurrence of acute brain new event on 92%. The transcranial Doppler (TCD) is currently a low-cost and non- invasive method to evaluate the risk of ischemic stroke in patients with AF is recommended for children aged between 2 and 16 years old. The life expectancy of patients with AF has increased with improved prevention and treatment of its complications. However, it is possible to use the criteria of the STOP study, obtained through the DTC, to stratify the risk of stroke in over 17 years of age. In recent years a growing number of studies on the subject and the growing improvement of the prognosis of these patients. However, few data exist on the use of DTC in adults and there is so far, long-term prospective studies. (AU)
