Abstract

Clove oil is a natural anesthetic, low cost, easy acquisition and preparation and whose effects, efficacy and safe concentrations have been reported for fish. To evaluate the potential of this drug in mitigating the physiological responses to stress in lambari, native species in Brazil with recognized potential for fish farming, an experiment will be stablished in a complete random design with four treatments and 20 repetitions. The blood levels of glucose, lactate, the hepatosomatic index, liver and muscle glycogen, hematocrit and oxidative stress (muscle) of fish submitted or not to hypoxia stress (air exposure), with or without prior anesthetic induction. To assess the proper concentration and effects of the anesthetic, combined or not with NaCl dissolved in the water, on the physiological responses to simulated transporting (vertical and horizontal movement of the packaging every 10 minutes, for five hours) another experiment will be stablished in a complete random design, in 3x3 factorial arrange (0, 3 and 6 g NaCl; 0, 5 and 7.5 mg.L-1 of the anesthetic), with 100 fish per treatment (density of 20 fish.L-1), registering mortality rate after the simulation, cumulative survival rate after 96 hours and water quality before and after the procedures. The same physiological parameters assessed in the first phase will also be used to determine the effects of transportation, by sampling 15 fish from each treatment. Data will be submitted to ANOVA comparing the means by Tukey´s test (P <0.05). (AU)
