Abstract

Sleep restriction is now recognized as an increasingly common condition inherent to modern society, and one that in many ways, is detrimental to physiological systems. Although sleep is now viewed by a significant body of researchers as being essential for the biological systems homeostasis, the full impact of sleep restriction on health, medical disorders and well-being remains largely unknown. In this sense, the experimental sleep restriction has been considered an important toll to clarify the consequences of chronic sleep debt, given the large number of physiological changes associated with sleep loss, particularly with respect to metabolism, motor and cognitive performance and inflammatory profile. Beyond the experimental approach, it is essential also to study the consequences of sleep restriction experienced by individuals with sleep disorders and shift workers, since the sleep quality of people in these situations demonstrates significant impairment. In order to attend these different aspects, the aim of this project is to access the consequences of sleep restriction to the physiological and inflammatory profile using three approaches: Approach 1: Effects of sleep restriction in healthy subjects. Approach 2: Effects of sleep restriction in subjects with sleep apnea. Approach 2: Effects of sleep restriction in shift workers. (AU)
