Perceptual acquisition of phonic contrasts in Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

The aim this study is to investigate the perceptual performance of children on discrimination and identification tasks of the phonic contrasts in Brazilian Portuguese. Mostly, the objectives of this study are: (i) to verify if there is a determined phonic class that presents a greater difficulty in its identification and discrimination; and, (ii) in case there is, to propose a perceptual acquisition order. The hypothesis to be defending is the perceptual acquisition develops not only gradually, as also follows a systematic order of acquisition following the same tendency described in terms of the production. A forced-choice minimal-pair identification task and an AX discrimination task involving all the phonic contrasts will be conducted with 100 children, 4-8 years old, using PERCEVAL software. The stimuli used in the identification and discrimination tasks will consist of a typical adult's recordings of familiar disyllabic words (minimum pairs) contrasting all the phonemes in the stressed position. The acoustic stimulus will be presented to the children using headphones and they will need to choose which stimulus-correspondent picture was shown on the computer screen. Both presentation time and reaction time of the stimulus will be measured by PERCEVAL software. The analysis criteria will be: perceptual accuracy, response time of hits and mistakes and patterns of errors from the construction of a confusion matrix. (AU)
