Abstract

Studies have demonstrated a direct relationship between stress and cardiovascular diseases. Although the importance of this issue, the mechanisms involved in association between stress and cardiovascular complications was poorly investigated. It has been proposed that behavioral and physiological changes evoked by stress are related to characteristics of aversive stimuli (eg., type, duration, frequency and intensity). However, there is not evidence in the literature about the influence of the type of chronic stress in cardiovascular changes evoked by repeated exposure to stress events. In this way, an aim of the present study is to compare the consequences of two protocols of chronic stress (variable chronic stress and repeated restraint stress) on cardiovascular function.Other propose of the present study is to investigate the influence of the ontogeny and sexual dimorphism in consequences of chronic stress on cardiovascular function. It has demonstrated a vulnerability of adolescents and individuals and animals of female sex to behavioral and neuroendocrine consequences of stress. However, the effect of chronic stress on cardiovascular function of adolescents and females was poorly investigated. Thus, the aims in the present study are: 1) to compare, in adult male rats, the effect of the chronic variable stress and the repeated exposure to restraint stress on cardiovascular function; 2) to compare, in adult female rats ovariectomized and SHAM, the effect of the chronic variable stress and the repeated exposure to restraint stress on cardiovascular function, and to investigate whether effects in these animals are different from those observed in adult male rats; and 3) to compare, in adolescents male rats, the effect of the chronic variable stress and the repeated exposure to restraint stress on cardiovascular function, and to investigate whether effects in these animals last until adult phase and are different from those observed in adult male rats. For evaluation of cardiovascular function, we will investigate the effect of the chronic stress protocols on basal parameters of arterial pressure and heart rate, baroreflex activity, vascular reactivity to vasoactive agents and the cardiac autonomic balance.
